A Note to Aspiring Innkeepers…
FOBBA is the organization recognized by the Government of Ontario to perform inspections of B&Bs and apply ratings based on the results of those inspections.
At the present time, it is not required that you belong to an Association in order to operate a B&B in the Province of Ontario. We, as FOBBA members/directors, feel that it is certainly beneficial for you to do so as well as consider membership with the local chapter in your area. There is so much that can be learned through other people with the same interests, passion and drive to not only open a B&B but one that will survive and prosper into the future – and have fun doing it!
One of the most important things you need to consider is location, location, location. Why would guests want/need to stay at my bed & breakfast? Seriously take a look at the layout and adaptability of your house in terms of providing ensuites or private baths for each guestroom. Next you should contact your city/town administration in order to find out what is required of you and whether there are any obstacles with your current zoning situation that need to be addressed. You will require an Ontario Business Licence. Our FOBBA Annual General Meeting is also a great place to talk to a cross-section of B&B owners. The last AGM was held in Leamington on October 28 & 29, 2013. B&B hosts-to-be (aspiring innkeepers) are most welcome! Below is a list of documents that you may also find helpful during your preparation/orientation:
BBCanada, a partner of ours, is also a fantastic contact when it comes time to advertising your B&B - Good rates, good exposure and widely used by Canadian Bed and Breakfast innkeepers.
The following is a list of peer support B&B owners who have both the experience and willingness to share their "Tips-of-the-Trade" by answering any questions that you may have with regards to opening a B&B in Ontario as well as the benefits of joining FOBBA:
- Elly Veld, Zeelandia B&B, Burgessville, ON
- Melanie McLennan, London House B&B, Guelph, ON
- Brian Skipper, Queens Landing B&B, Kitchener, ON
